Flash Gordon region 2 DVD
I've been reading some reviews on the region 2 cut of the Flash Gordon DVD and several people have stated that the region 1 cut is a far better transfer due to a superior master being used. Can anyone confirm or discount this?

I may be talking rubbish but I have faint memories of reading the Momentum release used the R1 remastered transfer.

I have the old BMG release which is of questionable quality at best. One I need to upgrade...

Re: Flash Gordon region 2 DVD
I've had mine for years and only came across the negative reviews last night. I didn't want to get the Blu-Ray as I try to avoid getting old films in that format unless I've read a lot of positive reviews about the transfer and of course it helps when the BD work out cheaper than the DVD, lol.

I must admit that I did look at the BD steelbook purely because it comes with a bonus CD. I wonder how many tracks it has on it...

Re: Flash Gordon region 2 DVD
The UK BD steelbook is a huge disappointment in many ways, I borrowed it from a friend a while back to compare it to my R1 and R2 AE dvds, the prior I have for superior transfer and some nice extras and the latter solely for Brian Blessed's brilliantly entertaining commentary.
UK BD's transfer is quite terrible (US BD's isn't any better, only darker) IF you're like me and not a fan of way overdone noise reduction and contrast. Universal's BD releases are commonly known for having this issue - by default. The audio is far from HD quality as well. DTS HD MA track is quality wise equal to the poorly made DTS up-mix on the R2 AE dvd and the 2.0 audio track is far superior.
If you're only after the OST cd, it can be found much cheaper separately. The one that comes in the steelbook is identical to the original retail version: 18 tracks, about 35 mins of music.

Work occasionally keeps me off the grid but I'll be around sooner or later.

After doing some extensive research (reading a lot of reviews and looking at various screen shots) it looks like the region 1 DVD has a much better transfer. Unfortunately the only version of the film you can get with the Brian Blessed commentary track is the region 2 Silver Anniversary Edition. So it depends on what's more important to you. For me it's having the better transfer.

Cheers for the imput, Jyri. So region 1 Saviour of the Universe edition for the transfer and region 2 Silver Anniversary Edition for the BB commentary.

R2 UK Silver Anniversary Edition with DTS track is the best choice. Best a/v quality. Both Blu-Ray discs are utter crap.

Yeah I wasn't expecting much from the Blu-Ray's. You think the R2 AE is better than the R1 SotU then Jim?

DVD screencaps here:
http://www.dvdactive.com/reviews/dvd/flash-gordon.html#
Like Jyri, I've also got the R1 Saviour for the image & the R2 Silver for the extras.
Would love to get it on BD, but have been holding off on buying the (less) compromised US disc until I can get it cheaply enough.
A true, true childhood fave: me & my younger bro saw it 13 times on its original release! My pre-pubescent self knew that, as the goodie, I should be, ahem, 'rooting' for Melody Anderson, but even then, the oh-so-bad Ornella Muti made me feel urges I didn't yet fully understand!
In addition, I saw both Brian Blessed & Mike Hodges at year's Derby IDFest. Both gave brilliant, lengthy talks & Brian sat in on a screening of FG, laughing, talking & tweeting all the way through it! He was right behind me & you can see me on his Facebook page...
Possibly the only time I've ever condoned someone 'disturbing' a film I'm trying to watch in the cinema!

Flash Gordon has been one of my fave films since I first saw it as a kid (I think it was a movie premiere on telly for Christmas Eve. I ordered the Saviour of the Universe edition DVD from amazon.com yesterday, lol.
