Re: 4K TVs

Like I said in the other thread, I believe Atmos requires speakers to the ceiling ("above the audience"). So it's not that Atmos arrives and "replaces" other audio formats. Not that many people are willing to add speakers to the ceiling and many don't even have space for that. Ceiling??? Not for me ...

Re: 4K TVs

I'd say if you're using a 6-channel analog stream you'd get the full bandwidth for most HD streams, maybe there could be some frequencies lost with higher-rate encodes (96khz for example) but i honestly have no idea. And yes, optical/coaxial can only carry 1.5mbps DTS, Dolby Digital and PCM stereo ...

Re: 4K TVs

Yes they do, but I don't "get" how the bluray's audio comes through a gfx card's hdmi out *shrug*. I'm not too knowledgeable about such things, I just assumed they would output both video and audio like any other HDMI but I guess i'm wrong. Not necessarily. I've simply never had a video card with ...

Re: 4K TVs

...Also PC speakers tend to be incredibly bad...Every set of PC speakers i've ever heard generates a horrible sub-sonic bass throb which ruins the sound and gives me a headache, and they never seem to include any kind of frequency crossover hardware so it just ends up sounding like sonic muck. But ...

Re: 4K TVs

I doubt any more disc-based formats will ever be introduced, it'll just be a case of everything being downloaded/streamed. At the end of the day most people just don't have space for tons of discs, and for those who don't like owning them it's a lot less of a hassle to just download/stream a movie ...

Re: 4K TVs

Is this really necessary so quickly? Many people are still happy to buy DVD quality and probably less and less DVD and Blu-rays are being bought because of Netflix and services like them. For me, HD only feels like it's been around for a few months, now that word is being dumped for 4K which I ...

Re: What did you watch today?

Is this any good? A few times I've been about to play it via Netflix, but changed my mind. THE CONSPIRACY (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2330322): Not for me - 2/10. From my notes:
Structured as a mystery that's light on interesting facts and heavy on BLAIR WITCH style (without the shaky camera or ...

Re: What did you watch today?

TITLE: Steins;Gate (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1910272 )
The ep01 & ep19 commentaries can be skipped, but the ep12 & ep24 commentaries are worth listening to. The music is interesting, especially the Toki Tsukasadoru end-credits song, which adds to the mood and atmosphere of the show. The show ...

Re: What did you watch today?

The Attack (TV) Great movie about a famous arab surgeon working in Israel and discovering his wife is involved in an attack - 7/10. OMAR ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2852406 ) is a good companion film to this (if I remember correctly, I gave it 7/10). Agree with both reviewers at http://www.abc ...

Re: What did you watch today?

RoboCop (2014) - Big fan of Jose Padhila's Elite Squad films, so had to check this one out. He did the remake proud IMO. Very good, but perhaps lacking a little more of the political bite that made the original so good. 8/10 Haven't seen this yet, but someone else who watched it thought it was a ...

...TOP LAKE, will have to adjust my expectations now, given how much hype I've heard about it beforehand; thanks for the heads-up. Maybe you'll find it amazing! Will see - given what you wrote, won't rush for it given I've got many more things to watch beforehand.

My favoured crime-noir-ish ...

Re: What did you watch today?

Lethal Weapon 4 (UK Blu) Still decent, but the last 10 minutes are really too much "syrup"... - 6/10
Top of the Lake (UK Blu) Big disappointment, nothing new here, it's kind of sub-sub-Twin Peaks. Never been convinced by Elisabeth Moss, who would obvioulsy like to believe she's Jodie Foster in The ...

... but if one needs to watch something more than a few times to truly comprehend it (I've only watched it 2, maybe 3 times total), then it was not well written. I don't necessarily agree with this statement, just because it's hard to comprehend doesn't mean it's not well written... if that were ...

Re: What did you watch today?

Akira is certainly a complicated and complex film, and it took me several viewings to truly "get it", here is the best explanation that I could find: http://www.reddit.com/r/TrueFilm/comments/11b589/ive_seen_akira_1988_probably_over_a_dozen_times/
Hmm, a well-written analysis. Though I think the ...

Re: What did you watch today?

Yes. The US Blu is region free and has the extended cut (136:21). I got the 2-pack with Heartbreak Ridge. I'm a bit confused. The 136-minute US dvd is listed as the theatrical cut http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=22453. Why is the 136-minute US blu-ray called the extended cut too ...

Re: What did you watch today?

I had directly bought it on Blu a few years ago and watched the whole show, but maybe I was expecting too much and got somewhat dissapointed because of it. I guess I'll try a second viewing "shortly", this would be interesting for a direct comparison with The Pacific. Perhaps ...again (similarly to ...
